Zakynthos 2007

From Thursday 10th May 2007 - Thursday 17th May 2007 Me and my partner Toon went to Kalamaki in Zakynthos.

Below is our holiday diary

Day 1 - The Travel

The taxi was booked to pick us up around 3:30am as the flight was at 7:30am so we got up at 2:45 and got everything ready and as i sat down ready to have my nice hot cup of tea the taxi arrived early only by 10 minutes but still i didn't get to have my tea, The taxi diver was very good he got us to Manchester Airport in 1 hour cause their were no traffic on the road at that time in the morning , When we got to the airport to check in we thought we would be stood there for a while as the Que was big but in fact i think we was through in around 30 minutes (My Travel Airline) so we had a nice stroll around the airport then went to board the Plane 7am and we was on the plane and ready to go until the stewardess made an announcement that we all had to DE-board the plane and there was a problem with the air-conditioning system so we was told to go down to the information desk to find out more and when we got there all we was told is that they didn't know anything at the moment and wouldn't till about 9:30-10:00 and been as though me and Toon had already spent 3 hours in the airport and seen everything we decided to go get something to eat then head for the Bar for a drink.

Now 8:45am and still not heard anything about our flight so i went to the information desk and the lady told me that they will make an announcement when we can go back to the plane, 30 minutes later and still nothing so i got Toon and we went to have a look what it said on the screens and glad we did cause it said our plane was boarding even though they never called it.

Finally after 6 hours in Manchester Airport we was on the plane and ready to take off at 11am and the pilot said that he as going to fly us higher to get more tailwind and we should be there in around 23 rather than the usual 4. On the plane they served Breakfast then the in-flight movie which was Dream Girls which was very good and before we knew it we were there ready to land.

Yippee were here, The Airport in Zakynthos is tiny and the weather is very hot i think it was around 30 degrees when we landed which was a nice change from all the rain in Sheffield. The place where we stayed is called the Kalamaki Beach Hotel which is very nice (quite in may) it had the beach on the doorstep and the centre was about a 10 minute walk which wasn't too bad.

We firstly unpacked our things then went for walk up to the centre to see what was there and it was better than i has expected, very quite, not too many Brits around it was just a strip of shops/restaurants and Pubs we said we was going to have a few drinks then go back cause we wanted to get up in the morning feeling fresh and go for a walk along the beach. It was about 12:30 when we returned to our room we headed out of the centre about 9:30 but a few Hotels up from our they had a lady on singing and she was good so we stopped off there for 1 and then we found that the next hotel down had the Internet and we could go in and use it which Toon wanted to do cause he needed to make sure his Forum was coping without him, so if we hadn't have done all that we would have probably been in bed for about 10 but at least we had fun.

Quintessentially Mae Questel

In short, it was a marvelous career and, seemingly, a marvelous life. Certainly it was a quintessentially New York career stage, cartoons, commercials, radio. Feature films weren't really a factor until they began to move east in more recent times.

Furthermore, Mae retained her authenticity as a character by remaining in the east. Her later on-camera roles felt very real. Mae's most natural voices were always maternal and Jewish. Her Olive Oyl, originally styled after Zasu Pitts, ultimately bec… Continue

Mae Questel - Celluloid Capers

During the '30s, a live-action Mae portrayed a Boop-ish character in several Paramount short subjects and was also in a Paramount feature called Wayward. The studio offered her a Hollywood contract in 1932 but typically, she turned it down and remained in New York at the request of her first husband. As with most of her ambitions, film success did ultimately come to Mae. All she had to do was live her life and wait for it.

During the '60s and '70s, she appeared in It's Only Money with Jerry Lew… Continue

Mae Questels - Ancillary Antics

Ancillary Antics
Mae had a related career in radio that included both afternoon and evening Betty Boop broadcasts, as well as appearances on such programs as The Green Hornet and Perry Mason. Her early television work included a stint as a panelist on Stop Me If You've Heard This One and as the voice of the interactive cartoon sprite, Winky Dink. She did commercials for Bromo Seltzer, Nabisco Honey Grahams and Yuban Coffee and was the memorably helpful Aunt Bluebell in a series of Scott Towels s… Continue

Mae Questels Animated Career

Taking the role of Betty Boop made Mae Questel immortal (and perhaps vice-versa), but the Fleischers got something out of the bargain as well the first in a stable of voice actors that would make Paramount cartoons second to none in the field of vocal characterizations. With the addition of Jack Mercer (Popeye) in the mid-1930s, the Fleischer cartoons began featuring top-quality vocal tracks long before most other cartoons from either New York or Hollywood could even come close. Mae's ability to… Continue
